Snow Day

If I said I was dissapointed about having a snow day I would be lying. It’s nice to have a free day. Is it really free though? I wonder how businesses that are strictly walk in businesses suffer because of weather? Are they open at all? Do the cut there hours and employees down? Is it worth being open?

Cell Phone

I’ve had a cell phone plan since I was 19 years old. I started with just talking on the phone with no extras such as text messaging, internet, navigation, and other applications. Two years ago I upgraded my phone to a Blackberry and am very satisfied with all of the “new age” technology it came with. The only problem is paying almost $100 a month for everything I really don’t need. I tried setting up a family plan with my girlfriend but if I cancel my contract they will tack on a $200 cancellation fee. Phone companies really try to get every penny out of their customers. Is there any decent phone companies anymore?

Black Friday

I’ve had a sheltered life pertaining to”Black Friday”. Untill two years ago I had no idea what it was. What is the whole purpose of having the majority of stores having sales on the same day? What created this chaotic day of bargains and deals? I hate to shop so it has no effect on me but I heard an employee died last year? This is a ridiculous holiday and I say that S@!t is for the birds.

Decision Making Assignment

I learned that I really understand the roles of the couples in my family and extended family. I believe I could have answered every question about houselhold purchases between each couple. A really funny observation about my grandparents is that my grandpa told me that he has stepped into a grocery store to buy groceries maybe twice in his life. It appears that the older the couple the more distinctive roles there were.

Veterans Day

I’m very pleased with the businesses that promote Veterans Day. It seemed like Christmas with all the hospitality I received on that day. I really appreciate what Applebees did. They Provided me with a free meal and a couple bottles of beer. That definately makes me want to return there. It’s a great way for them to have an increase in business.

Army as a Service Business

I feel that the army is a service business and I’m an employee of that business. So if you look at it as a service business you would by astonished with everything the emloyees go through when it come to paperwork. In a normal job if you were going to get get paid a bonus that year you would expect it to come when finance told you it was. Well the army is a little different. I was suppose to get my bonus in May and I’m currently still waiting for that check. The most irritating part is that I’ve done everything I can and I still have to wait. Many people in a normal service business would have literally raised hell about a similar issue. There will be several blogs in the near future explaining more contrasts of the army as a service business.

Product layout vs. Fixed-position layout

In class we learned the difference between product layout and fixed-position layout. The product layout process is your basic assembly line where the product moves. The fixed-position layout is where the product is stationary and workers come to the product. The class activity proved that fixed-position layout was more efficient while performing the coloring task. I think the set up could be better. If you divide the class by two, and have one side do the product layout and the other side do the fixed-position layout on a time test. then record the times for both teams. then switch the layout between the teams and time it again. average the event times so that no one the teams can’t debate about warming up or already having practice. Then you will have a more realistic time.

leadership skills

I’ve had to establish leadership skills from being in the army. The higher the rank, the more responsibilities. The lower the rank, the more physical tasks. It’s definitely an authoritarian style management. It’s sometimes difficult to always have the serious game face on when need be and it’s also difficult when it has to be cut and dry. It is needed in the style of business the ARMY is. The ARMY is a service business for the United States and several other countries. People would want the army to be authoritarian style because we are the one’s who protect and defend our country and the most strict method is a must.

Opening up a Business

I have always considered opening up a business. I want to invest in a business that I would enjoy. Playing pool is probably one of my favorite things to do on my off time. So I’ve been brainstorming with ideas and am falling short on originality. I keep thinking of making personalized billiard rooms with their own privacy, music, and theme. It would take quite a bit of cash to create this and also a decent location where the customer flow would be excellent. I would need to know the correct steps in figuring out how to set this up. Business class has helped but I want to get more serious with it. Any ideas?

Good customer service skills

I went to a bar last night to shoot pool with a buddy as I normally do. Him and I always go to whichever place offers free pool. I get to the bar, order a pint and took a sip. I went over to the table so I can rack the balls as my usual routine. The table wasn’t opened up for free pool. I asked the bartender what happened and she told me because of leagues starting they didn’t offer free pool on Tuesday or Wednesday anymore. I told her that I’m gonna drink my glass and go to another place. When I was a couple sips from finishing my beer she hands me the key and told me I could open it up. Because of that my buddy and I stayed there for hours and left her a great tip.
